Travel and the Covid-19 Vaccine: What You Should Know

As more people in the U.S. are getting Covid-19 vaccinations, restrictions are slowly loosening up and many individuals are traveling domestically and internationally. When it comes to the Covid-19 Vaccine and Travel, what should you know? Do you need the Covid-19 vaccine for travel? As of right now, no, but it’s important to know that your vaccination status may affect your plans depending on your final destination. The CDC has been keeping an updated list of travel recommendations for certain destinations. Continue reading as we answer some commonly asked questions and share what you should know about travel and the Covid-19 vaccine that you may find useful if deciding to vacation abroad this spring or summer.

What does “fully vaccinated” mean?

According to the CDC, people are considered “fully vaccinated” 2 weeks after the second dose in a 2-dose series, such as Pfizer or Moderna, or 2 weeks after a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson Vaccine. If you are in Florida and want to know where to get the vaccine check out this post.

Do fully vaccinated people need to be tested or quarantine when traveling within the U.S.?

Fully vaccinated people may travel from state to state without pre-trip testing or quarantining when they return. This is because fully vaccinated travelers are less likely to get and spread the virus that causes Covid-19.

Do fully vaccinated people need to test before leaving the U.S. for international travel?

This question is a bit more nuanced. It will depend on the specific destination as each country has its own rules. The U.S. government does not require testing before leaving the country. However, your final destination may require you to have a negative Covid-19 Viral test (even if you have been fully vaccinated) or documentation of recovery from Covid-19.   You can check out this excellent site from the U.S. State Dept. that provides links to each nation’s current rules.

Do fully vaccinated people need to quarantine upon returning from international travel?

Good news! The CDC says fully vaccinated people do not need to self-quarantine after returning to the U.S. following international travel.

Do fully vaccinated people who are returning from international travels need to be tested before arriving in the U.S.?

Those who are traveling internationally need to be tested no more than 3 days before air travel back into the U.S.  For current info be sure to check out the CDC’s website along with the requirements from your particular airline carrier.

What else should I know?

Individuals who have completed their Covid-19 vaccine series should still take steps to protect themselves and others.
